If you checked the registration for ultralight, experimental amateur built, and light sport aircraft you will find that the majority of the aircraft registered are tail draggers!
 
Today’s taildragger aircraft cannot be compared to the tail draggers of yesteryear. Today’s aircraft are lighter and considerably more powerful! The advantage of this is that they get off the ground faster and land considerably shorter. They are also more maneuverable during takeoff and landing, because of the control systems used.
 
While the tail draggers of yesteryear would take hundreds of feet to get airborne, today’s aircraft like the KitFox, RANS Coyote, Legend Cub, AeroTrek, Outback, Carbon Cub, Just Aircraft Super STOL etc. will literally jump off the ground in less than 100 feet!
 
With the advancement in tail wheel technology, lighter aircraft weights, and larger control surface areas today’s tail draggers are considerably easier to control than their predecessors.
 
Now I’m not saying that tail draggers are is easy to fly as a tricycle gear aircraft! What I am saying is that the skills used in learning how to fly a taildragger will in most cases make you a better pilot.
