Single Seat Taildragger Aircraft
When someone refers to a taildragger aircraft it means that the main landing gear are located forward of the center of gravity of the aircraft, with a tail will located at the rear of the plane. There are a number of challenges for pilots flying taildragger's. Most taildragger aircraft have reduced visibility over the nose, which requires the pilot to move side to side while taxing. During takeoff and landing a taildragger aircraft is more susceptible to crosswinds, which can result in what is called a ground loop.
Many manufacturers of ultralight aircraft produce taildragger aircraft because of the simplicity of design, and the weight saving. This allows them to fit into the ultralight category in the United States which has a weight limit of 254 pounds. An advantage that taildragger style ultralight aircraft have over a conventional aircraft is their power to weight ratio, and lower wing loading. These combine for considerably faster takeoffs, in some cases less than 50 feet!
Two Seat Taildragger Aircraft
A taildragger aircraft has a number of advantages over a tricycle gear. Because of the nose high attitude of most taildragger's, and the wide gear stance they are more suitable for rough field operations such as grass strips or dirt runways. Most taildragger's are also designed Bush planes! They are normally equipped with a more rugged landing gear and are configured for slow flight for getting in and out of shorter and rougher fields.
Taildragger aircraft also make great float planes, or amphibian float aircraft. In fact if you travel to northern destinations in most cases the only way to access them is via air, and a float plane. Another area that you will find taildragger aircraft in is World War I replica aircraft. The majority of these aircraft were taildraggers.
